Getting Past Self Doubt and Resistance

One of the ideas central to our work at Kav Counseling is Stephen Pressfield's concept of resistance. A protean force that we all face while moving forward on our path – particularly at times of growth and leveling up. In this video and elsewhere, Pressfield suggests that a primary orientation to dealing with resistance is will power. He advocates always moving forward even in situations that are not ideal. We believe that will power is only part of the story -- in many cases paying attention to subtle/not subtle feedback and making adjustments to environment and approach, is also critically important. Drawing from substance abuse literature and our experience in treating addiction, we know that optimizing circumstances are a key part of long term success. While will power is essential in getting to and moving from turning points and beginning new trajectories, it is not sufficient to sustain the long term effort involved in success. Part of the work we do at Kav Counseling is helping our clients build and maintain a life environment that is conducive to long term viability in the arts.
