"New evidence on the ‘mad genius’ theory: Are famous artists more prone to mental illness?" https://www.psypost.org/new-evidence-on-the-mad-genius-theory-are-famous-artists-more-prone-to-mental-illness/{Article Here}
This article takes on the question regarding the relationship between psychopathology and creativity. The findings show a correlation for creative artists with high levels of depression, substance use and anxiety. However, there was no corresponding correlation for creative scientists which begs the question as to why there is a difference between the two groups. The idea that neurodivergent thinking is responsible for predisposing creative individuals to mental illness is weakened by this difference between the groups.
We believe there are significant environmental factors at play that contribute to artists' well being and susceptibility to anxiety, depression and substance use. For many creative scientists, there is a clear path forward in forging a financially stable and creatively fulfilling career both through academia and the corporate world. Grants and funds are abundantly available for scientific work. The same cannot be said in our society for artists. There is no comparable clear path for artists. Scarce funding is hard to navigate and far from sufficient to sustain an artist at even a minimal level. We believe the lack of defined path and received support is a critical difference between these two groups. This explains the difference in the study's findings and something we are very mindful of as we seek to make our artistic communities stronger and healthier.
